This weekend while browsing my local book store I came across a fantastic compilation of photography by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz.
A Photographer’s Life: 1990-2005 by Annie Leibovitz
Annie Leibovitz began working as Rolling Stone’s staff photographer at the age of 21, and by the time she was 24 she was Rolling Stone’s chief photographer. When she left the magazine ten years later she had photographed 142 covers. Like this one of
John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1980, the morning before his death.
The book features her portraits of the famous & iconic alongside photographs of her friends and family, as well as photographs she has taken throughout her travels. Annie says this of the book: “This is one life, and the personal pictures and the assignment work are all part of it.”
The images offer a peek into her personal life chronicling her families highs & lows. The photos are emotional, narrative, beautiful, and at times disturbing. The years 1990-2005 signify beginning and the end of her relationship with essayist Susan Sontag, and include personal and emotional photos of Susan on her deathbed.
