Casa y Cucina: Green Smoothies

Friday, September 30, 2011

After quite some time of ordering green smoothies at my local smoothie joint, or buying a bottled version while on the go I decided to start making my own for breakfast. Not only do I get to decide what goes into the blender (or conversely what DOESN'T go in), I also don't have to worry about choking down those sickly sweet bottled versions like Naked Juice's Green Machine. I treat my green smoothie making experience like a science experiment, always trying new ingredients, and sometimes making huge messes in my kitchen, but that is all part of the fun! I'm sure if my hubby walked in and saw me standing over the blender with goggles and a white lab coat he wouldn't bat an eye. Haha!

My favorite green smoothie has the following ingredients:
  • 1 banana
  • 1 green apple
  • sliced cucumber
  • chopped celery (I go easy on the celery b/c of the distinct taste/smell)
  • chopped mango (optional, but one of my favorite additions)
  • kale (spinach is a good substitute as it is virtually taste free)
  • a cup (or so*) of water (*I don't measure when I'm making these, so I typically just eyeball it while pouring) --if you have crushed ice that would work well, but cubed ice is more annoying than helpful. You can also use soy milk, almond milk, or coconut water as well
  • blend & enjoy

Green smoothies satisfy my hunger, ward off cravings, give me loads of needed vitamins from food, and leave me with super energy boost to start my day (And this is coming from a caffeine junkie). Now, before I go any further, I will say that I've read a lot of sites claiming green smoothies have super powers and will lead to weight loss, radiant skin, and all that. And while I believe they do contribute to those things, I don't believe they alone will grant you all your hopes and dreams. Keep things in perspective, but do yourself a favor and give a green power smoothie a whirl.

Casa y Cucina: Frozen Graham Banana Peanut Butter Sandwiches

Ice cream, especially when sandwiched between some freshly baked cookies, is my downfall. I've spent more time than I'd like to admit checking twitter to see if the Cool Haus truck was around. In order to satisfy my sweet tooth, I went looking for a healthier alternative to the ice cream sandwich and discovered these graham sandwiches. They take little time to prepare, are delicious, not horrible for you, and satisfy your cravings for sweets. I think most kids would like these as well.

What You Need:
2 Ripe Bananas
2 Generous Tablespoons of Peanut Butter
8-10 Graham Crackers
Foil/freeze safe container

Directions:
  • Simply take two bananas and mash them together with 2 generous tablespoons of your choice peanut butter (I used Jif's low Sodium Creamy Natural PB, but you can use crunchy, creamy, or might even try an almond butter or Nutella as those might work well too although, I haven't tested).
  • Once you have this mixture mashed into a creamy consistency, take your choice of graham crackers (I used Honey Maid's low fat honey grahams), and split them in half until you have approximately 8 sets.

  • Then simply spoon the mixture onto one side of the graham cracker sets and sandwich the mixture.  If you have extra banana-PB mash simply add more sandwiches.
  • Once you have your sandwiches made, place them freeze safe container or wrap in foil and place them in the freezer. They will be ready to devour the next day, as they need to freeze for a minimum of 6 hours.
YUM! These taste just as delightful as an ice cream sandwich with less guilt! Enjoy!

Makeover Memo: Miu Miu Lips

Miu Miu Fall 2011 Beauty Shots via Style.com
Red lips is a huge beauty trend for Fall. I especially love the beauty looks that were on display at the Miu Miu Fall 2011 runway show because of the dimension it gives the lips.

I decided to try out a version of this look this morning, see below for the results:

Full face swatch
Lip swatch
Simply take your choice of red lipstick (I used M.A.C.'s limited edition lipstick Heartless (Venomous Villains) for the base of the look concentrating the color on the outer portion of the lips. I then added my pink lipstick (M.A.C.'s limited edition lipstick Strayin' (Hello Kitty)) to the inner portion of my lips and blended the colors together with my brush.  I added a bit of M.A.C. bright fuschia pigment over the pink lipstick on my bottom lip to give the look a bit of extra pop. Play around with different shades and finishes for your look and most importantly, have fun!

MAC Posh Paradise Collection Haul & Swatches

Monday, September 19, 2011

I decided to crawl out from under my rock and pick up some pretty new things from M.A.C.'s latest collection Posh Paradise. I love using M.A.C. paint pots as a base for my eyeshadow looks, so I was really excited to see some fun new colors in this collection. There are eight in total, so in an attempt to keep myself in check I purchased four: Blue Creation, Half-Wild, Nubile, and Idyllic (Quite a lot of product if you think about how long these things last!!)

The Posh Paradise collection also included ten limited edition shades of M.A.C.'s Mattene lipstick which are packages in a small, sleek, tube design. Half the shades are matte, the other half are classified as being semi-matte which really means they have an ever so slight sheen about them. I was really impressed by the Mattene formula, I love matte shades (Ruby Woo is my favorite M.A.C. lipstick), but I hate that dry feeling you get whilst wearing them...it must be akin to caking cement onto your lips. The Mattene shades do not have that extreme drying feeling. They aren't the most moisturizing things in the world, but if you favor a matte finish, this will feel like a godsend.

I was really tempted to purchase Eden Rouge as well, but felt that I am a little red lipstick poor, so I opted for the vivid magenta shade of Rare Exotic. I am truly in love with this shade and the semi-matte finish of the lipstick.

Check out my photos, swatches and more of my thoughts & feelings on the collection:

{clockwise} Idyllic, Nubile, Pure Creation, Half Wild paint pots

Pure Creation paint pot, a gorgeous blue shade that leans a bit teal

Nubile paint pot, gorgeous every day paint pot, similar to Painterly, but not matte, and more pink/peach than beige. I use painterly on a nearly daily basis, this is a nice substitute unless you are going for an all matte look, in which case Painterly still wins.
It is sort of odd that I opted to purchase Nubile, when I decided against purchasing Treasure Hunt because of its similarities to MUFE Aqua Cream #11 when there are arguably more differences between Treasure Hunt & MUFE #11 than there is between Painterly and Nubile.  MUFE Aqua Cream #11  has much more shimmer than Treasure Hunt, is more gold than yellow. In the end, I felt that I would wear Nubile more than Treasure Hunt, and that I preferred the more gold look of MUFE #11 over the look of Treasure Hunt.

Idyllic paint pot A gorgeous copper shade that reads more Cranberry in the package than when applied...I get more of a brown shade with subtle red sparkles.  I used this as a base under the pigment copperbeam and it was stunning. I can't wait to try this with more pigments, as I have a number in that copper family.

Half-Wild paint pot- a true grape color, that will look lovely in some of my purple looks. I wear quite a lot of purple, or violet eye looks, so this will be fun to play with. It however, is my least favorite out of the ones I purchased probably because it is the most matte of the four.

Comparison Swatches: Indianwood p/p, Idyllic p/p, Pure Creation p/p, Half-Wild p/p, Nubile p/p, Painterly p/p
Comparisson Swatch: Nubile vs. Painterly....Painterly is most more matte & beige in comparison, while Nubile has a bit of shimmer and is more pink.

Rebecca Minkoff Endless Summer Sale Haul

Wednesday, September 07, 2011

I hit up Rebecca Minkoff's endless summer sale and treated myself to two amazing bags. I chose the Swing bag in pink beige and the Nikki Hobo in lavender. The swing bag has a genius adjustable chain strap that allows the bag to be worn over the shoulder or as a cross-body. The Nikki Hobo is huge, yet has one of the most comfortable shoulder straps known to man. It is the perfect everyday bag that will fit all of the junk I lug around with me! Check them out below:

Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour Swatch & Review

Tuesday, September 06, 2011

If you're familiar with M.A.C.'s shadesticks and grease paint sticks, you'll immediately recognize that the concept of Laura Mercier caviar sticks is similar. The price is a bit steep at $24 a pop, but the caviar sticks do exactly what they claim to do. They smoothly apply richly pigmented cream shadow, that after twenty seconds or so it dries into a crease & smudge resistant base. I found that window to be long enough to smudge and blend, after that, I found the shadow pretty difficult to budge:

Steel; Amethyst;   Smoke;  Khaki; & Cocoa $24 each @ Sephora

The caviar sticks also proved to be a pretty good base. I used Amethyst as a base under M.A.C.'s Mauvement pigment, and the results were fantastic, like they were destined to go together. I can't wait to try more looks with these! These may not be budget friendly, but  I found that they can can be useful for mixing up night looks. If you have the cash to splurge on these, I would recommend taking one and adding it to your arsenal. If nothing else, they are certainly fun to play with!

Lip Color Pencil Swatches: Urban Decay, Nars, & Sephora Collection

Monday, September 05, 2011

Super-sized lip color pencils are a huge cosmetics trend right now. I went on a swatching mission to compare shades, formulas, and prices. If you're looking for a lip pencil that packs a color punch, check out the Urban Decay Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Pencil. The downside is that will set you back $19. The UD lip pencils easily have the best color pay-off, so if you don't mind the price and want a highly pigmented lip gloss give these a whirl:

Urban Decay Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Pencil Swatches:

Nars & Sephora  Comparison Swatches:
top row: Urban Decay Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Color: Crush, Adrenaline, F-Bomb, Big Bang
middle row: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil $24: Cruella; Dragon Girl; Roman Holiday, & Dolce Vita
bottom row: Sephora Collection Ultra Vinyl Lip Pencil $12: Vinyl Raspberry; Strawberry Delish; Fuchsia Fever; Fancy Red;

The swatches above aren't the best quality, but you get the idea...the Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil is largely a skip at $24, unless you are looking for a matte red, then I highly recommend Dragon Girl. If you love the UD lip colors but don't want to spend $19, I recommend checking out the Sephora Collection Ultra Vinyl Lip Pencils they are very near duplicates and at $12 they are the best value of the bunch. The UD formula might be slightly more moisturizing, but I found the Sephora formula to be virtually identical.
