StyleMint, Ashley & MK Olsen's New T-Shirt Venture

Thursday, June 30, 2011

Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen (the designers behind The Row and Elizabeth & James) are launching a new t-shirt venture beginning July 1st at StyleMint. The super soft and stylish cotton tees will be available for $29.99 exclusively online at the members only. Style suggestions will be offered up based on your personal preferences once you answer a series of questions.

The striped Fillmore tee is my personal favorite seen above in two color combinations @ StyleMint
Once you make your first purchase, the site operates along the same lines as Shoe Dazzle, in that you can "skip a month" in the first 5 days of the month without being charged. If you don't skip or purchase a tee you will accumulate a credit that you can use towards the purchase of your next shirt. There is no additional cost for shipping...$30 for it all, and returns are made simple. Of course, it is always free to browse the tees and the style suggestions, so head on over and check it out!

Drugstore Detours: Revlon Just Bitten Lip Stain and Colorburst Lip Gloss

Monday, June 27, 2011

On my most recent drugstore detour I picked up a few winners from Revlon:

Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain + Balm:

I am keen on achieving a perfect pink pout, so I decided to test drive Revlon Just Bitten Lipstain + Balm in Passion. I am generally a big fan of lip stains, but find most formulas to be drying without gloss. Revlon's Just Bitten lip stain marker has two ends, one for color, the other with a clear gloss to set and smooth the shade.

Passion Lip Stain Marker Tip

The two pronged approach simplifies the application process and eliminates the mess that came with old school lip stains. I did find it a bit difficult to get the stain to apply evenly, but, as intended, the gloss helped smooth out and set the color.  Easy application, and long lasting color makes this the perfect product to throw in your bag and reapply as needed.

The Just Bitten product line has a nice range of colors, including Passion, a shade of barbie pink that is perfect for summer. Check out my swatches below:

Revlon Colorburst Lip Gloss:

Revlon Colorburst Lip gloss in  Papaya and Peony
My new favorite drugstore product is easily Revlon Colorburst lip gloss. The packaging looks and feels high end, the gloss is super shiny without being drying or sticky. I tried the shades Papaya and Peony, and will likely be picking up a few more because I liked them so much. Papaya was semi-opaque while Peony was more on the sheer side with micro glitter. Peony will very likely wind up in my daily lip gloss rotation.

OPI Silver Shatter Review & Swatches

Friday, June 24, 2011

I've been on the hunt for some shatter/crackle top coats for some time now. I've been dying to try one out. I recently came across a huge display of O.P.I. Silver Shatter, so naturally I was inclined to make a purchase. My nails had been painted a pretty coral color (also by O.P.I., but the name escapes me), so I applied one coat over each nail and watched as the silver top coat "shattered".
The top coat is fast drying and almost immediately after application begins to crack. Because of this, a liberal swipe of color works best.

Silver Shatter will give your nails a gritty, tough girl, finish. If you want to try something fun & new, I would recommend tracking this or any of the six other O.P.I. Shatter shades down. The product is certainly easy to use, and would be fun to try over various nail polish shades. I love the novelty of the product, and the fact that the unpredictable cracks transforms your nails with each application. I'm not sure I love the silver shatter shade itself as it reminds me of cracked concrete. Given I have an entire bottle of it, I am eager to try it out on my array of nail polish shades. I think the silver is calling for a purple base, or maybe a fun glitter shade. If you can't find O.P.I.'s shatter shades, look out for China Glaze & Sally Hansen also have Crackle top-coats in various shades that will give you a similar look.

Purchase O.P.I. Silver Shatter Nail Lacquer $5.45 @ Amazon

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

"The Art of Getting By', a film starring Freddie Highmore (a/k/a the boy from Charlie & The Chocolate Factory and Finding Neverland) & Emma Roberts, hits theaters this weekend. It made a big impression at Sundance this winter, and looks to be just my cup of tea. I can't wait to check it out!

Cheap Thrills: Colorful Watches

Monday, June 13, 2011

Xhilaration Teal Watch $12.99 @ Target
Colorful watches have been a huge trend this season. On my most recent to Henri Bendel brightly hued timepieces lined the tables on the 2nd floor. It was impossible not to be drawn to them! Naturally, almost all of them were in the 50-150 range. Sure, they aren't expensive as far as watches go, but hard to justify if you are on a budget. Luckily, on my weekend Target run my attention was diverted to the non-essential jewelry department. While browsing, my husband pointed out these big bright watches lining an end-cap. I grabbed one in teal (they also had hot pink), and headed to the checkout where the asking price was a cool $12.99. I can't remember being so pleased with a $13 purchase! The watch looks very lovely in person and fits my wrist perfectly. Most watches are a bit too big for me so, I was very happy with that. I will say that the watch doesn't look to be that adjustable, but there are some links that look like they could be removed if your wrist is smaller than mine. Sadly, if you have larger wrists these watches might not fit, although for $13 it is worth a try. Target has an excellent return policy if it doesn't work out.

The teal looks to be sold out online, but as I stated I purchased mine in-store yesterday. There are other colors available online: pink, purple, yellow, hot pink, & green @ Target. Happy shopping!

Fashionable Camera Bags & Straps

Wednesday, June 08, 2011

Me with my beloved Nikon

My Nikon DSLR has been my constant travel companion over the past few years. It is frequently accompanied by least one toy or film camera and a few different lens options.  Blame it on my wanderlust, or my tendency to over pack, but I have been in desperate need of a camera bag that A) protects my gear & B) isn't too terribly bulky or ugly to carry.  I also would love to have a new camera strap as I still have the black Nikon strap that came with my camera. Sure, the black Nikon strap has served its purpose for many years, but a little color never hurt anyone.  Check out some of the camera bags and straps I am currently coveting below!

Kelly Moore Camera Bags:
These bags were made for a girl like me in mind. When I first spied them at Adorama, I couldn't believe they were camera bags!  The bags come in a variety of colors and are made out of man-made water resistant materials and have padded, removable, adjustable dividers. Not only will my gear fit in these, but it will be protected and I'll look GOOD carrying it:

Juju Bag {inside} JuJu Bag $250; B-Hobo Bag $169, B-Hobo Bag {inside}; all @ Kelly Moore.

Libby Bag $249,Libby Bag {inside}; Boy Bag $199, Boy Bag {inside}; all @ Kelly Moore.

HighKey Camera Straps:
These camera straps come in a variety of color and patterns and cost $30 (unless noted otherwise). If you are so inclined you can have a custom strap made as well. Some of my favorite colors/patters are below:
Maybe if I give my camera a makeover I will resist the urge to purchase a new one... :) We'll see how long that lasts!

Hair Diary

My locks are long, fine, and straight which means I am constantly seeking ways to change up my hair. I am a big fan of side braids, but lately I've been experimenting with up-dos, waterfall braids, heidi braids, and various combinations of these elements. These were just a few of my everyday looks... most of them took only a few minutes to complete.

Follow me at Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/platinumblonde/

I have been posting these looks on my Beauty Bar board on Pinterest and as it stands right now is a hair diary of sorts. I expect it will grow to include photos of beauty and nail looks along with other's looks that inspire me.  So if you're using Pinterest check me out, follow me, and if you aren't you can request to sign up here.

Casa & Cucina: Kate Spade China & Barware

This is definitely a case of me putting the cart before the horse, but when we finally move into a home big enough to entertain I would like to have china as darling as this.

{top} illustrated tea time cup and saucer set $30; illustrated toast of the town hors d'oeuvres tray $75; illustrated toast of the town footed cake plate $60; {middle} illustrated top shelf teapot $60; illustrated salan wall cup and saucer set $30; illustrated top shelf cake plate $75; {bottom} world traveler mug $20; illustrated step brightly cup and saucer set $30; two of a kind hiball $50; illustrated tidbit plates $50; two of a kind mine & yours hiball $50; just desserts tidbit plates $50; all @ Kate Spade.

I adore the watercolor illustrations on these platters, tea sets, plates, and mugs. These would be fun to mix and match. That tea pot would be a fantastic place to start! Of course, barware is something my husband (still getting used to that) and I specialize in...the majority of our cabinet space is filled with it, so I think the his & hers or yours & mine highball glasses would fit in nicely.

Check out the entire Kate Spade Home collection over at Kate Spade.

I was surfing the web for something completely unrelated and just happened to come across this Beatles tie-back tank. These pieces can become staples in their own right or worn together to a lunch date or summer party:

MAC Surf, Baby! Haul & Swatches

Thursday, June 02, 2011

My Surf, Baby! Haul from M.A.C.
Since I've come back from Aruba with sun kissed glow I've been favoring peach and coral lips, bronzed cheeks, and summer-y colors on my lids. M.A.C.'s Surf, Baby! collection sucked me right in. Now that I've had some time to play with the collection, I am sharing my photos of my stash, swatches, and of course my overall thoughts on the collection.

Hibiscus Lipstick, Strange Potion Lipglass, Tan Tint Skinsheen Bronzer Stick

Sun Blonde Eyeshadow, Saffron Eyeshadow

Lip Products:

Lipstick:
Hibiscus Lipstick

Hibiscus Lipstick
Lipstick Swatches/Comparison:
Hibiscus Lipstick Swatch

Hibiscus Lipstick (left) swatched next to Viva Glam Cyndi lipglass
I didn't purchase Viva Glam Cyndi lipstick but judging from the lipglass swatch I would imagine the colors are very similar. Hibiscus has a beautiful gold shimmer that sets it apart, but depending on your lip pigmentation these might look very similar on the lips.
I also compared Hibiscus (middle) to one of my drugstore detour purchases, Revlon Orange Flip (far left)

Hibiscus Lip swatch

Hibiscus Full Face Swatch

Lipglass Swatches/Comparison:
Strange Potion Lipglass

Strange Potion Lipglass
Strange Potion Lipglass Swatch

Strange Potion Lip Swatch
Strange Potion Full Face Swatch

Comparison Swatch: M.A.C. Pink Lemonade Lipglass (permanent), M.A.C. Strange Potion Lipglass, M.A.C. Mimmy Lipglass (Hello Kitty Collection), Stila Gumdrop Lip glaze (from a holiday set...same color family)
Pink Lemonade and Strange Potion are nearly identical, but as you can see Pink Lemonade is slightly more pink.   Mimmy in the tube looks to be very similar just a tad lighter, but is extremely sheer in comparison. Out of curiousity I included gumdrop as it had previously been unopened, I will be utilizing it this summer though!

FACE- Tan Tint Skinsheen Bronzer Stick Photos & Swatches:
Tan Tint Skinsheen Bronzer Stick

Tan Tint Skinsheen Bronzer Stick

Swatch: Tan Tint Skinsheen Bronzer Stick (unblended & blended right)
I didn't have a cream bronzer, so I decided to purchase skinsheen bronzer stick and try using it under my bronzer of choice Nars Laguna. It does the job...I applied it using M.A.C.'s 188 brush. It is extremely pigmented and creamy and blends nicely. It also has some staying power once it is dry. It is a promising product that can be improved upon, but ultimately nothing to go crazy over.

Eyeshadow/Pigments Photos/Swatches/Possible Dupes:

Saffron Eyeshadow, Sun Blonde Eyeshadow

Saffron Eyeshadow, Sun Blonde Eyeshadow

Swatch: Saffron Eyeshadow, Sun Blonde Eyeshadow

Swatches: Melon Pigment (already owned), Naked Pigment (already owned); Saffron Eyeshadow, Sun Blonde Eyeshadow
I didn't purchase Short Shorts or Swell Baby because I found them to be similar to Nylon eyeshadow (swatched in the upper right corner) and Bough Grey eyeshadow (Give Me Liberty of London) (swatched in the lower right corner) I found them to be about 80-85% similar. Surf USA is a gorgeous shadow, but I don't wear the blues I have enough to justify purchasing yet another teal. Sun Blonde is a really gorgeous color, and I have mixed feelings about Saffron, but have a feeling it just needs to grow on me a bit.  Overall, it was a good showing by M.A.C., but it seems they are really just holding out for their Semi-Precious collection coming this summer.

I purchased the products at Bloomingdales, except for Hibiscus which I had to hunt for a bit, but most of the products pictured are still available at MAC.
