M.A.C. Viva Glam Cyndi & Viva Glam Gaga Lipglasses

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Viva Glam Gaga Lipglass; Viva Glam Cyndi Lipglass $14.50 each @ M.A.C. Cosmetics

M.A.C. Cosmetics is launching Viva Glam Cyndi and Viva Glam Gaga lipglasses in stores on September 2nd and are currently available online to order.  As you might have guessed, the limited edition shades will correspond to the lipsticks of the same name launched back in February.  Viva Glam Gaga lipstick quickly surpassed others as my favorite lipstick, so I am 100% on board with picking up Gaga's lipglass.  I didn't pick up Cyndi's lipstick, but I am tempted to try her lipglass counterpart as the finish and brighter color might suit me better.  M.A.C. is sweetening the pot with more Viva Glam bags for the taking as well.  All proceeds from M.A.C.'s Viva Glam products benefit the M.A.C. AIDS Fund, and I say there is nothing better than looking beautiful for a good cause.
Viva Glam Cyndi Bag $28; Viva Glam Gaga Bag $28 @ M.A.C. Cosmetics

What do you think? Will you be springing for any of these products? Are you Team Cyndi, Team Gaga, or Team Viva Glam for both?!?!

Zebra Nail Art Tutorial

Sunday, August 29, 2010

Nail art is a huge trend for fall and one I happen to love. I think the secret to keeping nail art understated is by keeping your nails short and round. It is a matter of personal preference, so go with what you're comfortable with. As the title might suggest, this video will show you how I created the zebra stripes on my nails. It is easier than one would think, and a great way to have fun with nail polish. Add a glitter french tip, or do a reverse french in a metallic silver. I'm telling you, once you do this a couple of times and get the hang of it, you'll be addicted! Watch & Learn:

P.S. I'm wearing O.P.I.'s Meet Me On The Star Ferry shade that debuted with the Hong Kong collection this spring.

Rebecca Minkoff Shoes + Fall 2010 Favorites

Thursday, August 26, 2010

Rebecca Minkoff is officially venturing into the shoe business.  I couldn't be more excited about this development! The line will have 25 pieces and will be priced from $160-$395. I would love to own the shoe on the tip-top of the image above, or the fantastic nude perforated leather "Vixen" platform pump pictured below:

The shoe collection will be apart of the Rebecca Minkoff Spring 2011 presentation. I can't wait to see the full collection. Until then, I will be busy shopping the Fall 2010 collection! My favorite looks from RM are pictured below:

A Single Man

A few weeks ago Netflix delivered this treat to my door: "A Single Man", starring Colin Firth & Julianne Moore. I was really stunned by the beauty of this film. The story is powerful, the cast is gorgeous, and the cinematography is absolutely stunning. This film marked Tom Ford's directorial debut...he also financed the film, produced it, and adapted the screenplay. If you haven't seen it please put it on your queue immediately.

Some of the beautiful stills:

I especially adore this still of the gorgeous 'Charlie' applying eye makeup:

Fashionable Aid

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

There are a few fashionistas that will swear up and down that their favorite pair of Louboutins, Jimmy Choos, or Manolos are comfortable. These are the same girls that live in their heels. They'll walk five miles, dance the entire night away, and still have a smile on their face. Hell, these girls probably sleep in them! I am not one of these girls.  Don't get me wrong, I consider myself to be a shoe lover and standing at a mere 5'4" heels are absolutely necessary, but I find it increasingly difficult to cope with the pain.  Maybe it is the added stress my feet endure because of my running (I'm currently training for a half-marathon), or maybe my pain threshold is too low, but I can't take more than a four hour stretch in heels! At night it isn't as bad, because the alcohol numbs the pain. For day, I don't leave the house without a pair of flats, blister block, and a stash of Band-Aids. And let me tell you, beige Band-Aids peeking out of your Louboutins is not attractive!  Given that drinking a few too many gin & tonics will likely get me fired, an act that would leave me with no way of purchasing any fabulous pain-inducing shoes without posting shady ads on Craig's list advertising "massage" services, I am going to have to stick with my current routine.  My solution is to seek out cuter band-aids and I'm NOT talking about the kiddie ones, I'm talking about these fun and fashionable Band-Aids designed by Cynthia Rowley!

The limited-edition bandages come in a special metal tin and are available in fourteen designs featuring lace, sequins, gems, chains, and images from the Cynthia Rowley runway show. The square gem Band-Aids happen to be my personal favorite!

The tins of Cynthia Rowley Band-Aids are available for purchase at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in NYC, at Cynthia Rowley stores or online here.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Design Ignites Change, an organization that engages high school and college students in multidisciplinary design and architecture projects that address pressing social issues in their own communities.

See, fashion actually does heal all wounds! :)

Urban Decay Box of Shadows VOL III: NYC

Urban Decay is following their hit Alice In Wonderland Box of Shadows with a limited edition palette dedicated to my current city: NYC. The UD NYC Box of Shadows features a pop-up mirror surrounded by original illustrations of stylish girls and and the city that never sleeps. There is also a pull out drawer filled with sixteen Urban Decay eye shadows (seven of which are new and exclusive to this box of shadows), two 24/7 glide-on eyeliners, and one mini container of Urban Decay Primer Potion. The Box of Shadows will retail for $54 and will be available beginning on September 7th at Urbandecay.com and will roll out to stores on October 1st (cross your fingers for an earlier launch).

If you're like me, and believe that us NYC girls should get first dibs then you are in luck! You and 999 other beautiful ladies can score one of the box of shadows early this coming Saturday (August 28th) at the Sephora in Times Square from 1-9PM! If you are planning on hitting up the event be sure to bring your camera and take pics of yourself and your friends with your loot and upload it to Urban Decay's fan photos on facebook for a chance to win a complete brush set (11 brushes valued over $300)! Prizes at the door for the first 200 to show up and the amazing UD makeup team on hand to help you master a look from the new palette will be an added bonus. (Note: There will only be 1000 pieces available for the event and there is a limit of 3 boxes per person, so if you want more than that for some reason you better bring a friend)

I know you must be wondering what's in this beautiful box, so lets open it up shall we...
Inside you'll find seven completely new eye shadows (Bordello, Kush, Loaded, Money, Radium, Rockstar, and Suspect), two shades that were previously sold exclusively at Sephora (Haight & Psychedelic Sister), seven permanent shades that are typically Urban Decay's best-selling shadows, (Snatch, Last Call, Maui Wowie, Midnight Cowboy Rides Again, Smog, Perversion, and Uzi), two 24/7 eyeliners in Zero and Ransom, and Urban Decay's much loved primer potion.

Here is a closer look at the line-up:

Eyeshadows:

Perversion – matte charcoal black (Permanent)
Uzi – white silver w/ glitter (Permanent)
Loaded – dark forest green with sheen (New Shade)
Kush – grassy green (New Shade) --This has a lot of cousins and possible dupes (looks to have the most similarities to UD's Homegrown), but a very pretty shade indeed
Midnight Cowboy Rides Again– champagne with lots of glitter (Permanent) --This shadow is known for its fall out and though it is a pretty shade, it requires a lot of extra work. The extra work for me isn't really worth it given that this is a shade that is very easy to duplicate. I own this a few times over, and I really wish that UD would stop insisting on putting it in its palettes. At this point, I feel like they are mocking me. :)
Last Call – plum with red undertones and a shimmery finish (Permanent) -- One of my all time favorite shadows, but I already own it a couple of times over.
Rockstar – deep shade of eggplant (New Shade) -- I own the Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner in Rockstar and it is one of my favorites! I use the eyeliner frequently in place of a dark brown liner.  If this shadow is half as good as the eyeliner of the same name, I'll probably love it.
Money – silvered blue with a metallic blue-green sheen (New Shade)
Haight – shimmering teal (was sold as a Sephora Exclusive) I absolutely loved this shade when it was launched with the Sephora collection. I decided not to spring for the full sized shadow at the time because I am what you would call "teal eye shadow poor"…um yeah, I have a lot.
Maui Wowie – medium gold w/ silver glitter (Permanent) another shadow with fall out issues…
Smog – coppery bronze (Permanent) This has been in every UD palette I can think of, but it is a shade that is universally liked
Bordello – mauve-pink with glitter (New Shade)
Radium – bright medium blue w/ frost finish (New Shade)
Snatch – peachy pink w/ glitter (Permanent) This shade was in Urban Decay's Show Pony palette
Suspect – taupe with a hint of bronze (New Shade)
Psychedelic Sister – Purple Amethyst (Sephora Exclusive shade)

24/7 Eyeliners

Zero- a fantastic black liner, one of the best in my opinion and will gladly add a second to my collection
Ransom- an iridescent violet liner, yes, please

Primer Potion
This primer is amazing, however the packaging is TERRIBLE, the mini version of this is cute and all but it is even more difficult to get the product out, could Urban put this bad boy in a tube already? (Update: Just today Urban Decay posted a picture of its professional sized primer potion on facebook and guess what it is in a TUBE! Yesssssssssssssssssssss! It looks like the tube contains a lifetime supply, so even better!)

If you on a budget and find yourself tempted by the amazing packaging and new shades, think about it like this:
  • This palette has a lot of value especially if you don't otherwise own the majority of the products sampled in the box (7 are completely new so that helps, and 2 were Sephora exclusives so if you didn't grab those, you should be good)
  • Ask yourself if you would be willing to pay full price ($17 for an eyeshadow) for the shades included. If yes and you love them that much, then why wait?
  • All in all you will be getting approximately $200 worth of Urban Decay products with a $54 price tag.
  • The formulas used in creating this palette are the same that are used in the full sized packages, so quality will be as amazing as always.
What is your verdict? Will you be buying this palette? If I don't buy it for myself, I will certainly consider buying as a gift! Anyone headed to the Sephora event this weekend? I might venture over just for fun...

    Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Attention all sex kittens (and aspiring sex kittens), the M.A.C. Fabulous Felines collection is here waiting for us to try on and head out into the wild.  Personally, I love a well executed cat-eye, so I am most excited about the new eyeliners launching with the collection. J.Crew + 'The Romantics' and lovely fall lookbook images

J.Crew teamed up with the cast of the film, "The Romantics" for a J.Crew collection shoot. Costars, Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel, Adam Brody, Jeremy Strong, Malin Akerman, and Rebecca Lawrence seemed like one big happy family in the photos. I only wish they had featured the lovely Anna Paquin, who plays the bride in the movie, in the shoot. Check out the playful images below:

Loving: Copper Sequins & Club Monaco Fall 2010 Lookbook

I have a weak spot for sequins, even if I do tend to lose them as the night (or day) progresses (A modern day Gretel would surely use sequins as a trail, no?).  Lately, I've been attracted to the copper sequins in particular.  This variation on the trend seems to be the perfect way for me to transition into Fall!

Emma Dress @ Club Monaco (the Jodie sequined skirt would do nicely as well!); Metallic sequined bell skirt $275 @ J.Crew (Or try a variation of this look with this sequin pencil skirt for $138 @ J.Crew)

I'm also really loving Club Monaco's entire Fall 2010 lookbook, which was not surprisingly shot by the lovely Garance Dore. Watch the behind the scenes video below:

    M.A.C. Rodarte Collection is Off

    Tuesday, August 17, 2010

M.A.C. has canceled their upcoming Rodarte color collection due to the swirl of controversy around it. The collection was a spin off of Rodarte's fashion collection that was inspired by sleepwalking and the troubled Mexican bordertown Juárez.  Perhaps, the designers thought they would have no problem translating this theme to a line of cosmetics, but they were greeted by fierce backlash. Calling the line "tasteless" for using  Juárez as a key source of inspiration (and a name for one of the nail polishes), The Frisky blasted the line by saying:
"Juárez is an impoverished Mexican factory town notorious for the number of women between the ages of 12 and 22 who have been raped and murdered with little or no response from police. Most of the young women are employees at the border town’s factories, called maquiladoras, and disappeared on the way to or from work. Activists have been applying constant pressure on Mexican police, who have shown little response to properly investigating the murders, allegedly because the victims are poor women. The crime channel TruTV even called Juárez a “serial killers’ playground”! And it’s not like the Juarez murders are some big secret: Jennifer Lopez even starred in a film,“Bordertown,” playing a reporter who writes about the rapes and murders.”
This sparked a HUGE debate about the Rodarte line, causing M.A.C. to announce it would donate proceeds to a Juárez charity and alter the names of the Rodarte products.  Apparently, that didn't go over well either, because M.A.C. just announced that the line was being scrapped all together  “out of respect for the people of Mexico." The brand still has plans to donate the projected profits to organizations that support the women of Juárez.

Below I have included the images and original names & descriptions of the Rodarte + M.A.C. collection:

    Lipstick $14
    • Ghost Town sheer white with white, gold and green pearlized pigment (Frost) (Limited Edition)
    • Rose State mid-tone blue pink (Lustre) (Limited Edition)
    • Sleepless light grey taupe (Frost) (Limited Edition)

    Lipglass $18
    • Rodarte pale creamy pink with layers of sparkling white, mint, and pink (Limited Edition)
    • del Norte light creamy violet with layers of sheer sparkling taupe, pink and grey (Limited Edition)

    Lip Erase $16
    • Pale flesh tone NC 27 Shade (Matte) (PRO)

    Mineralize Eyeshadow $19.50
    • Bordertown black with red, pale blue, and silver veining (Frost) (Limited Edition)
    • Sleepwalker beige with copper, pale blue and pale pink veining (Frost) (Limited Edition)

    Pigment $19.50
    • White Gold white pearl with gold duochrome (PRO)
    • Kitschmas shimmering pink/mauve (Permanent)
    • Mauvement cool taupe with gold pearl (Limited Edition) (Repromote from Rushmetal, Overrich)
    • Badlands mid-tone shimmer beige brown (Limited Edition)

    Chromographic Pencil $14.50
    • NW25/NC30 Flesh tone NW25/NC30 shade (Matte) (PRO)

    Beauty Powder $25
    • Softly Drifting pale neutral white-ish pink with soft gold pearl (Limited Edition)

    Blush $18.50
    • Quinceanera shimmery mid-tone blue pink (Limited Edition)

    Nail Lacquer $12
    • Juárez bright opal pink (Frost) (Limited Edition)
    • Factory light opal mint (Frost) (Limited Edition)

Personally, I think M.A.C. made the right decision here.  A) the collection is not that strong B) the best products in the collection are permanent or available at the Pro store.  The layered lipglass is the only thing that really even caught my interest as far as the proposed limited edition items went, and I'd rather use lip gloss with a clear conscious.

I mean, even Style.com's description of Rodarte's fall aesthetic  gives me the creeps: "The show ended with a quartet of ethereal, unraveling, rather beautiful white dresses that alternately called to mind quinceañera parties, corpse brides, and, if you wanted to look at it through a really dark prism, the ghosts of the victims of Juárez's drug wars."   That is pretty effed up, I'll save my corpse bride look for Halloween, thank you very much.

I'm curious what you guys think.  Is M.A.C. correct in their decision, or do you think the whole thing is blown out of proportion? Let me know below...

    Jayne platform heels $228 @ J.Crew
When shoes such as these cross my path I begin to believe that love at first sight is a possibility.  Purchasing them is out of the question as I'm on a strict wedding budget, but if these lovelies magically appeared on my doorstep, I think I would believe in unicorns too...
