Alice's Adventures in Wonderland illustrated by Camille Rose Garcia

aliceinwonderlandbook

I recently took time to re-read my Barnes & Noble Classics copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and found a renewed appreciation of both the story and original illustrations. These illustrations have been re-imagined by nearly every illustrator on the planet, but I find Camille Rose Garcia's latest goth rendition of the story to be completely irresistible. Camille Rose Garcia's interpretation of Lewis Carroll's first book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, is available here now.

Generra Fall 2010

Thursday, February 18, 2010

generra

The new Generra designers, Swaim and Christina Hutson, presented a colorful Snow White inspired collection that was fun, happy, playful, and completely wearable. I imagine if Snow White was going to live with a bunch of dwarfs today, this is exactly the sort of thing she would want to wear.

Alexander Wang Fall 2010

alexanderwang
This collection had thigh-high leg warmers, suiting with cut-outs, velvet, and backpacks and was still amazing. That is the genius of Alexander Wang. Be warned, if you hate velvet and all fabrics that fall under that umbrella then brace yourself for what is sure to be a huge trend for Fall, because it seems everything Mr. Wang touches turns to gold. I hope I'm wrong because thinking of all the knock-off velour that would infiltrate stores makes me want to cringe. I'm going to try not to think about that, instead I am going to plot ways I can get my hands on one of those beautifully draped and gathered mini dresses, the wrap style sweaters, or even a pair of those leg warmers to pair with my own chunky heels.

Beauty:

The look was created using M.A.C. products:
MAC Pro Cream Colour Base in Mid-tone Sepia and Paint Stick in Deep Brown – Blended together and applied to the eyelid and under the eye
MAC Studio Finish Skin Corrector in Terracotta – Dabbed into the crease of the eyelid and under the lower lash line
MAC Gloss Texture – Layered over cream colour base all over the eyelid
MAC Chromaline in Black – Lining the upper lash line and the outer corner of the eye

Rebecca Taylor Fall 2010

rebeccataylor

Faux-fur jackets & vests, ruffled sweaters, animal prints, sheer blouses, and a few fringe details thrown in for good measure rounded out the fall collection. It is the Rebecca Taylor we love, but with a few menswear details and a bit sex appeal. The grey suede over the knee boot that traveled down the Rebecca Taylor runway is a MUST have for fall. Out of everything, I want those the most!

CoverGirl Smoky ShadowBlast Review

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

I picked up three of CoverGirl's Smoky ShadowBlast eyeshadow sticks to test them out. They promise to provide a classic smoky eye in two simple steps. Each tube has two shadow shades. The lighter shade has a round tip and is labeled as "step 1". The darker shade has a tapered tip and is labeled as "step 2". The lighter shade is meant to be used as a lid and under brow color, while the darker color is meant to be used as a crease and liner color.

I found the packaging to be really nice other than the fact that the sticks aren't labeled with the shade name (something I realized only AFTER throwing the packaging out). Not a huge deal, but annoying nonetheless.

I found the pigmentation to be fantastic. I loved the colors, and found that each went on smooth. The tips easily extend and retract, are buttery soft, and apply smooth. This may be completely self explanatory, but it is important to make sure you retract the tips (especially the tapered "step 2" tips) completely before capping. I nearly crushed the black tip of my onyx smoke shadowblast after just one use because I capped it without retracting completely. So, if you want to maintain the tapered shape I recommend paying extra careful attention to this detail because of the soft tips.

I wanted to try for a classic smoky eye, so I grabbed the Onyx Sky ShadowBlast, that is a duo of white and black, but also added the light silver shade from the Silver Sky Shadow Blast to my look. I applied Too Faced Shadow insurance as a primer and then applied the ShadowBlast combination. The shadow tips apply color smoothly without any tugging or pulling. I blended the colors with my finger, added eyeliner (I found the tapered tip to be too big to actually be practically used as a liner) and mascara and headed out the door. 20 minutes later I realized that I had some major creasing going on despite my primer application and blending method.

I had a similar creasing problem when applying the Purple Plum ShadowBlast on its own, so I think it might be best to use these to intensify your existing powder shadows. The price makes the product one that is worth trying, but because it is so prone to smudging and creasing a powder shadow to set the cream ShadowBlast is a must. I just don't see how this product could withstand a night of dancing in a club on its own. It is great to see the drugstore brands trying their hand at cream eyeshadow but creasing seems to be enemy numero uno at that price point (Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadow also creases terribly).

If you are hoping for a simple foolproof smoky eye I can tell you this product is going to look great for a full 20 to 30 minutes tops. It is a bit of a shame because CoverGirl had a great idea paired with fabulous shades. Check out the shades below:

Avant Girl's Closet

{image via The Cherry Blossom Girl}

If you are on a budget, but can't shake your love of high-end brands like Marc Jacobs, Seven 4 All Man Kind, Corey Lynn Calter, Giorgio Armani, & more then you just may be in luck. Vanessa, a former classmate of mine, contacted me over the weekend to let me know she has opened the doors to her closet and is in the process of selling some of the contents via her website Avant Girl's Closet. Of course, you may wonder why someone would want to do that, but with limited closet space and a credit card bill to pay, a girl has to do what she has to do. The items are authentic and in excellent condition many items having been worn only a few times. The prices are something you could only dream of typically ranging between $5.00-8.00 with nothing priced over $25. Check out the goods at Avant Girl's Closet.

L.A.M.B. Fall 2010

Saturday, February 13, 2010

So many designers have tried to perfect the rocker look, but no one really does it quite like Gwen Stefani. Given that she lives an breathes the lifestyle, it is clear that she is her own muse for the L.A.M.B. line. For fall 2010 she showed asymmetrical cuts, leather jackets, sweaters and tops belted with multiple leather belts, corsets, leather leggings, leather jackets, and even a knotted L.B.D. I couldn't help but notice the amazing shoes... there were several sexy booties, boots, and heels that I wouldn't mind attempting to walk in!

Ports 1961 Fall 2010

It was clear that Ports designer Tia Cibani wanted to experiment with the Fall 2010 collection combining futuristic themes with classic and tribal elements. While some looks had me utterly perplexed (I'll pass on the leather caps), others like the slinky draped mini dresses, amazing shoes, and some of the asymmetrical draped outerwear had me intrigued. There were certainly winning looks in the bunch, but it was easy to be distracted or confused with some of the other looks.

M.A.C. Viva Glam Gaga Lipstick

Cyndi Lauper and Lady Gaga are the new faces of M.A.C.'s Viva Glam line. 100% of the proceeds of Viva Glam goes to benefit the M.A.C. Aids Fund. Yesterday, I ran to the M.A.C. counter at Henri Bendel to pick up this gorgeous pink Viva Glam Gaga lipstick (a light blue pink lustre). If you are more of a Cyndi glamazon check out the Viva Glam Cyndi Lipstick -it is a light reddish coral lustre shade. For those of you who are Gaga fans I have photographed my lipstick and taken swatches for you! I absolutely love this lipstick!

Vena Cava Fall 2010

Friday, February 12, 2010

The Vena Cava fall 2010 collection had very little of their signature hand drawn prints that I love so dearly. Instead, designers, Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai, opted for fur-collared parkas, high-waisted culottes paired with fishnets, floppy hats inspired by park rangers, dresses layered over turtlenecks, and easy to wear cocktail dresses. In addition to floppy hats, sunglasses & gloves, the models wore colored extensions in their ponytails that just added to the cool vibe. The designers derived inspiration from a weekend spent in Woodstock and "designed a collection for the Vena Cava woman to wear in her cabin upstate: pieces that read more minimal, American, '70s tinged, and somewhat classic." While I don't plan on heading to an upstate cabin this fall, these looks will be perfect for treks into Brooklyn.

Shipley & Halmos Fall 2010

Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos opted to update our fall basics with chunky knit sweaters, varsity jackets, slouchy skirts, and trousers cuffed at the ankle. I have a feeling this is exactly what girls will be buying come Fall 2010.

Wren Spring 2010 Collection

Six reasons why I will be wearing Wren this Spring:

Isn't the collection lovely?! View the entire Wren Spring/Summer 2010 Look book here.

P.S. I love the MYMU shoes featured in the look book too! When I first saw them I thought they were TOMS, but upon closer inspection they are lovely colorful espadrilles simply cut in similar style as TOMS! I might just have to pick up a pair of those this spring as well!

A.P.C. Spring/Summer 2010

Even though I am about to be completely immersed in Fall 2010 looks I can't help but think about what I will be wearing for Spring 2010. The A.P.C. look book never fails to tempt me. While I'm not too crazy about the orange "disco jumpsuit", I simply adore the chic shirt dresses and accessories in A.P.C.'s most recent collection. View the entire collection here.

R.I.P. Alexander McQueen

If you ask any lady they want to be taller, they want to be slimmer, you know, and they want a waist. I'm not here to make people look like a sack of potatoes.
-Alexander McQueen
Today the fashion world lost a great talent, Lee (Alexander) McQueen who was found dead in his London apartment. I am saddened by this tragic loss, so in honor of his creative talent I felt it was appropriate to celebrate his amazing, daring, and beautiful work by showing some of my favorite looks from his collections over the years.
