It appears my favorite local news anchor, Steve Bartelstein, got the ax for sleeping through a scheduled newsbreak last Thursday during the horrific Bronx house fire coverage. He was in his office at the station, so my first thoughts were, "why didn't they just wake his ass up?" Without him, there really is no point in getting up to watch the news. Lori Stokes just seems clueless...she never seemed to get any of the jokes & references made by Steve Bartelstein & Bill Evans. They all have great chemistry together, but without Bartelstein on board the news is just the same depressing crap you get on every other channel. The newscast has been #1 in the ratings, and everyone seems to really like him, so why the rash decision on ABC's part?
Apparently, this incident was just the straw that broke the camel's back because Bartelstein was a badboy of sorts-- arriving late to work, was accused of sexual harassment (i believe the suit was thrown out), and there were rumors of partying. Because of this there was a clause in his most recent contract that stipulated there would be severe consequences for bad behavior. WABC simply took Thursday's incident as an opportunity to send him packing. I am bummed out about the decision, in fact the incident just makes me like him more! Can't you totally picture Bartelstein roaming the streets right now like Ron Burgundy? Anyways, like Bartelstein, I'll be sleeping in through the morning news!

I am totally disappointed that Steve is gone...I would get up at 5am just to watch the news!! It was like starting the day watching a sitcom...and being informed all at the same time. Why nobody woke him up for the newsbreak is a puzzlement at best, everything I've read states he was well liked by his peers at WABC. I feel bad for Lori too...she's got alot riding on her shoulders now. I used to love to listen and watch the bantering between the whole crew...they made you wish you were part of their circle of friendship. It's the end of an era of sorts...and I'll miss it all.
oh i feel bad for Lori too...it isn't going to be the same. Bill Evans will just have to do his own thing. (TEAR!)...maybe Steve will get his own show (in the AFTERNOON of course)?? i would totally TiVo it!
I too will miss steve. The dynamic between steve, lori and bill was awesome. morning news is important to those of us who start the day before most others. it will be lacking for me from here on out. Don't get rid of Bill!

I am so unhappy about this. I loved their morning show when I lived in NY and always looked for them when I visited the City. I was schocked when I recently visited and did not find Steve. I love Lori but they were a good team.
I am sooooooo happy to see Steve
back on tv. I'll be watching am
news on cbs now on the week-ends.
I'll be pulling for him, THE NICEST
GUY ON TELEVISION! Good to see you
back, Steve. Lots of luck, Tru
