The Da Vinci Code: Will You See It?

The
Da Vinci Code will open tonight at the Cannes Film Festival. Last night, critics were given the opportunity to screen the movie. Unlike the majority of Hollywood films today, The Da Vinci Code was not submitted to the various test & media screenings that are typical of hugely anticipated films, such as this one. Sony instead opted to keep this movie under wraps, utilizing private studio screenings instead. That is until now. Critics & journalists were the first to view the movie yesterday. The movie will premiere tonight in Cannes and will have a worldwide release in theaters this coming Friday. Judging from the incoming reviews, The Da Vinci Code did not fare so well with the critics. The movie is long with a run time of 2 hrs. 29 min, so it will probably take longer to watch the film, than it took most people to read the book. Overall critics have had few complimentory reviews, and have commented on the lack of onscreen chemistry between Tom Hanks (Robert Langdon) and Audrey Tautou(Sophie Neveu), have described Tom Hank's performance as "wooden", referred to "odd" dialogue, poked fun at Tom Hank's hair, and have maintained that the plot takes awhile to pick up as the filmakers make an effort to fill in the background details (who's who and such). aside from all of the controversy surrounding the film (which is usually a precursor to box-office success (example: The Passion of Christ)) 40 million people have bought the book and continue to buy it, so I think we all can count on a strong box office performance. I loved the book, and while I don't want to be disppointed by the movie, I will definitely go see the movie if only out of curiousity. All nitpicking aside, the movie is a murder mystery, and looks to me to be entertaining. I plan to see it this weekend? How about you? Have you read the the book?

I, for one, will not be seeing this for various reasons, with the latest being that virtually ALL the critics have derided it as thoroughly boring with wooden performances throughout (except for Sir Ian McKellen, of course) .. oh well, here's hoping they're all wrong and you have a great time at the movie!
