current project: drawing
my mom requested/insisted that i refrain from purchasing her a christmas gift because she says that me coming home for christmas is the only gift she wants or needs. she did however want me to draw her something to hang on one of her walls at home. i often do this for my parents and my drawings can be seen throughout her house and i don’t know if it is a good thing or a bad thing but no one ever knows that i actually drew them. anyway, a few months ago (before the bitter cold, rain, & snow hit new york) i would go to central park (usually on my lunch breaks) and find a place under a tree or a bench and draw/sketch for an hour or so. because my time was always limited out there i always brought my digital camera along and took a lot of photos from various angles of the summer/fall scenery so i would have a point of reference when i went back to my sketch book later on. i decided it would be entirely appropriate to go through my catalog of sketches and photos and create a final product to give to my mother on christmas. the scene/sketch/photo i decided on is actually of one of the many bridges in central park that i had sketched in great detail and took numerous photos of. ideally i would complete the drawing out in central park, however, i have a full time job and it is now bitterly cold. it is always difficult for me to work on a drawing and painting for an hour here and an hour there because i have a hard time picking up where i left off. it takes some warming up to get on the same creative wavelength as i was on initially, so sometimes a photograph i took of the subject matter speeds up the process. in high school i remember spending hours and hours each night working on art projects, sometimes staying up very very late, but now that i have graduated college and have a full time job and a whole slew of responsibilities it is difficult to even imagine having the time or energy to do that.
anyway, i started this project on sunday and as usual i’m going to be a little rushed but the goal is to do a little bit each night and just hope mama likes the final product. if problems erupt in my drawing i will make a few visits to the bridge to see if i can correct them. i hope to finish this project soon! maybe i’ll post a few pictures so you can all tell me to stick to my day job!
